Diplômée de Queen Mary et d'Oxford, Kate Williams est titulaire d'un doctorat en histoire. Fascinée par le XVIIIe siècle, elle a publié en Angleterre et aux États-Unis des biographies d'Emma Hamilton, dont l'adaptation cinématographique est en production, et de la reine Victoria avant d'écrire
Joséphine. Elle enseigne à la Royal Holloway University of London et fait de nombreuses apparitions télévisuelles, notamment sur la BBC, en tant que spécialiste de l'histoire royale.
